What is acrylic glass?

Acrylic glass - Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)

Since 1933 hard, clear sheets and blocks were manufactured from methacrylic acid methyl ester by Röhm and Haas in Darmstadt. It was from here that production went global.

Because of their properties, which are similar to the properties of glass, acrylates are also called organic or acrylic glass.

The Czech designation plexisklo (acrylic glass) is today commonly used as the designation for acrylate, more commonly polymethyl methacrylate. The name of this material is often abbreviated to PMMA and coloured or clear acrylic glass is made from it.

The advantages of Plexiglas include:

  • it is a hard, rigid and strong material
  • homopolymers are brittle, copolymers are tough
  • its surface is high quality
  • the surface has a high gloss
  • it is scratch resistant and can be polished
  • it has excellent optical properties (high clarity)
  • has high heat resistance
  • has good electrical and dielectric properties
  • resistance to weak acids and alkalis, non-polar solvents, fats, oils and water
  • high resistance to weathering
  • the material can be well processed and subsequently mechanically processed

The disadvantages of Plexiglas include:

  • propensity to crack on impact
  • flammability

Plexiglas and its uses

Plexiglas is widely used for its properties, especially its optical properties (transparency). It is used to make transparent covers, lamp covers and displays. In the automotive industry Plexiglas is used in the production of headlight covers, shields and speedometers, etc. In optics it has been appropriated as a suitable raw material for the manufacture of lenses for instruments and spectacles. In the consumer industry it is used for the manufacture of vases, bowls, jewellery, advertising items, advertising stands, etc. It is also used in the manufacture of acrylic sanitary ware. Plexiglas plates are used for the production of modern design bathtubs, washbasins, shower enclosures, etc.

Plexiglas light advertising

Plexiglas is an important material in the production of light advertising and exhibition. Both for outdoor and indoor use.
